Why Is Whey Protein For Me?

  1. Whey protein has been found to be the fastest absorbing form of protein. Previous studies thought this title belonged to egg protein but research has shown that whey protein is now the king. This basically means there is no more efficient way of getting protein into your system than by using whey protein.
  2. Recent research has suggested that your protein intake should be at least 1g of protein per pound of body weight but if you exercise regularly then this figure should be more like 1.7g and if you want to build muscle fast then it should be as high as 2.5g. This can be difficult to achieve with today’s fast paced lifestyle and whey protein makes reaching these goals much easier.Making a whey protein shake takes no more time than making a standard milkshake and you can even get special shaker bottles to mix it in.
  3. Whey protein is low in fat and carbohydrates making it the ideal form in which you can take protein if you are undertaking a weight loss programme. Typically, you will only find between 3g and 7g of fat and carbohydrates per 100g of whey protein and between 70g and 80g of protein. These figures get even better when you look at whey protein isolate.
  4. If your body is lacking in protein then it starts to use its own sources and that means taking it straight from the muscles. This means your muscles will actually start to shrink because of your training routine. The only way to ensure this does not happen is to make sure your diet contains enough quality protein and whey protein is the best and easiest way to do this.
  5. Whey protein contains all the essential amino acids you need. Whey protein is also the richest known source of naturally occurring branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine). These are essential for all active people whether you exercise to keep fit or are a professional athlete. The body requires higher amounts of branched chain amino acids during and following exercise as they are taken up directly by the skeletal muscles. Other amino acids need to be first processed through the liver before they can be of use.
  6. There are no known side effects of taking whey protein and it is suitable for vegetarians who include dairy products in their diet. It is also suitable for people with a low lactose tolerance providing you choose a high quality whey protein isolate.
  7. Egg protein has been shown to have a biological value (a measure of efficient absorption into the system) of 97, whey protein concentrate, the most common form of whey protein, has since been found to have a BV of 104 and whey protein isolate has an amazing BV of 157.
